Every journey starts with a single step. Ours begins with stillness.

We are going to spend a few minutes training the most important skill you will need on this journey, before we get into the knowledge and practices that lie ahead; and that is the ability to direct your mind.

Your mind is a means of collecting knowledge; where you turn your mind to, you will at once get knowledge of that thing, but it is generally on autopilot, and it flies through your mind, repeating old tales, and it answers before you even see. The way we break that pattern, and learn to maintain our attention where we want it to be, is called focus meditation. It's how we clear a space where new understanding can take root.

Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Put aside all the work, all the schemes, all the recollections, only so long. Let the world wait.

Notice yourself here, now. How is your mood? Heavy, light, restless, calm? Breathe deeply in... and out... then resume breathing normally.

Here's our practice:

You're not controlling the breath; you're watching it. Sense the coolness of the air as it comes in. Feel your belly swell, your chest swell. Experience the heat of breath exiting your body.

Your mind will wander. That's its nature. When you see it has wandered, smile within yourself, and bring it back to the breath. Start again at “one.” No judgment. No battle. Just return.

Your mind is like riding a horse. It will go right and left. That's its nature. It is not your business as the rider to prevent it from going astray, but to observe when it does, and to bring it back toward the path you have decided to follow.
